Northampton Town Preview Podcast Bristol Rovers Home- Previewing the first of six cup finals to round off the season for The Cobblers.
It’s Time To Act. But How?
I was appalled at the news of yet more racist abuse being received by footballers this week. Appalled but not shocked.
The fact that I am not longer surprised by these actions is, in my view, indicative of how backwards certain sections of society have become.
On the Preview Show this week (click to hear it above) I felt the need to speak out on this issue which has become so prevalent once more in the last 12 months.
It’s not like it ever went away but I have always felt that it was something that was on the way out.
I have never heard any racism at a Cobblers match in all my years going home and away. Perhaps I am lucky. Or maybe it is just my privileged position as a white male that has clouded my vision.
It may well be that the Cobblers fanbase are a diverse, happy bunch who don’t even entertain the kind of vile abuse Ivan Toney, Trent Alexander-Armstrong or any other person of colour has received. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen though.
I was pleased to see Swansea City and Glasgow Rangers’ announcements about removing themselves from social media for a 7 day period. It may not seem like a big thing but it is a step in the right direction.
I would like to see the FA, Premier League and EFL join together to do the same thing. While it’s great to see a number of individual clubs take this action, a more united approach would be less easily ignored.
Fixing a social issue like this isn’t easy and I don’t pretend to have any answers.
What I can say though is that we all need to band together to rid the world of abuse. We are all human beings. Regardless of the team we support, the god we believe in, the people we love and the colour of our skin. We are all the same and command the same respect as everybody else.
