Preview: Peterborough United v Northampton Town

Northampton Town Preview Podcast Peterborough United Away- It’s time for the second instalment of the Nene Derby this season.

The Nene Derby Preview

The Cobblers are making the short journey to Cambridgeshire on Friday night as they face the old enemy, Peterborough United in the Nene Derby.

For Cobblers fans, this is the biggest game of the season but it all feels a little subdued this time around.

Firstly there is the ongoing issue of fans not being able to attend and so matches just don’t feel the same as they do when we’re there. We’ve seen grudge matches all over the country play themselves out as damp squibs and there is a real danger that derby games such as this, won’t be the same as the would be if two sets of snarling fans were at either end of the ground.

Form

Peterborough – WDWWL

Cobblers – DLWLW

The Cobblers go into the derby with Peterborough having won 2 of their last 5 games. On paper that doesn’t sound too bad but the draw with Bristol Rovers last weekend wasn’t pretty and was, for many, the last chance of earning 3 points this season.

Posh, on the other hand have won 3 out of their last 5. Only a 1-1 draw with Sunderland and a 3-1 defeat at Blackpool blot their recent copy book. Rather more worrying is the 13 goals Peterborough have scored in those last 5 games. The Cobblers meanwhile have scored just 3.

Team News

Posh are without the services of goalkeeper Christy Pym for the rest of the season with a muscle problem, but Josef Bursik kept a clean sheet on debut in a 3-0 win at Swindon last weekend. Ronnie Edwards is back in training, but unlikely to be in the squad.

Sammie Szmodics has been declared fit after a pain-killing injection in his shoulder earlier this week – he missed the win against the Robins.

The Cobblers injury list just keeps on growing as Peter Kioso and Alex Jones were both declared major doubts at Jon Brady’s midweek press conference.

Mickel Miller, Jack Sowerby, Benny Ashley-Seal and Steve Arnold are all definitely out of the game at London Road.

Last Time Out

Northampton Town 0-2 Peterborough United

Nathan Thompson and Reece Brown secured a 2-0 win for Posh at Sixfields back in October.

The game itself, from a Cobblers perspective failed to live up to the hype and Posh controlled the game from start to finish.

Line-up Prediction

Score Predictions

It’s hard to be anything but negative right now as a Northampton Town fan but I can’t bring myself to predict the heavy defeat many are expecting.

I know that both clubs are at completely opposite ends of the footballing spectrum right now but I have to believe that Jon Brady will manage to squeeze something extra out of his side for this game.

In a way, I think the pressure is off for the Cobblers players. No one expects them to get a result, let alone win and as we see year after year, when the teams at the bottom stop worrying about what it all means, strange results happen.

I’m not going completely crazy, don’t worry. There won’t be a win for the Cobblers in my view but we could be about to witness the most dull game of football ever without any fans inside London Road. So I’m going for an absolutely amazing 0-0 draw.

Charles: Peterborough 0-0 Cobblers

Neil: Peterborough 7-1 Cobblers

Danny: Peterborough 0-0 Cobblers

Jefé: Peterborough United 5-0 Cobblers
