Transfer Deadline Day Musings

Something I’ve noticed recently is that there seems to be quite a bit of negativity around the results and performances so far this season. I’m guilty of it too but it has surprised me. Football hasn’t been the same for over 18 months and you’d think that we’d just be happy to be back in the grounds but apparently we want more than that.

Jon Brady’s Cobblers are just four games into the new League Two season. They’ve won 2, lost 1 and drawn the other. That isn’t a bad start by any means. But for many on social media, we may as well have not won a single game. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course but I for one didn’t think the performance against Crawley was as bad as I read online.

That isn’t to say that I’m 100% happy with the start we’ve made, just that I’m not panicking… yet.

With the transfer deadline looming (it closes at 11pm tonight – Tuesday) I would like to see some activity both in and out of Sixfields.

Despite Jon Brady’s appraisal that he has four strikers at his disposal, there are still question marks over Benny Ashley-Seal. On top of that, neither Danny Rose or Nicke Kabamba have shown any signs of scoring a goal this season. I know BAS has, but he really couldn’t have missed that chance, could he?

I, like most fans I think, would like to see another striker brought in – one with a proven track record of scoring double figures in League Two. And to help him put the ball in the net, a creative midfield player too.

I doubt we’ll get either. A new left back is most likely after Joseph Mills went off injured on Saturday (how did the Crawley player not get at least a yellow card?!) with what we now know is a fractured ankle.

Time will tell of course but without any additions today, I do worry about the Cobblers’ ability to compete at the top end of League Two this season.
