Cobblers v Blackpool Match Preview

Northampton Town Preview Port Vale – The new League 2 season begins as Port Vale come to Town.

Match Preview

Well here we go again then. The Cobblers are back and so are the fans. It’s been a long time coming of course and to have the opening game at our home of, the now re-named Sixfields Stadium, is a huge boost. It feels like it’s been ages since fans set foot inside Sixfields for a competitive fixture and that’s because it has been. Well over 500 days in fact.

A lot has happened since Sam Hoskins was sent off against Mansfield in March 2020. It’s a shame that we fans never really got to celebrate promotion to League One and with a new management team and relegation after just the one season, it’s unlikely we ever will.

It’s surely just coincidence that our first opponents this season are Port Vale, the side we ‘beat’ to the last play off spot 18 months ago. Not that they’ll likely hold that against us. A whole season has passed since then and Vale weren’t exactly brilliant.

With so much optimism in both camps, the game could well go either way and like all first games, is very difficult to predict.

Pre-Season

Port Vale, like the Cobblers, have also made 12 signings this summer. In fact every player that was out of contract at the end of last season was released by Darryl Clarke.

This will be Clarke’s first full season in charge Vale Park and he has looked to stamp his authority on his squad by bringing in some very experienced League 2 players.

Last Time Out

Northampton 0-1 Port Vale

It was an in form Vale who took the spoils back in February 2020. The Cobblers had been unbeaten since the start of the new year but a David Worrall header sealed the points for the Valiants mid way through the second half.

Line-up Prediction

Score Predictions

I’m so excited for this match let me tell you. Genuinely, I can’t wait to get down to Sixfields and sing my heart out. I’m even taking my daughter to her first game.

The positivity coming out of the Cobblers squad is infectious. Jon Brady is striving to give us a team and club that we can be proud of. The way that he turned the tables on the fans at the fans forum this week shows that he isn’t your typical arrogant manager. He wants to bring success to the town which he and the rest of his coaching staff call home.

Considering I wasn’t really feeling it about a week ago, I’m now raring to go and feeling more excited than I thought was possible. I think it’s going to be a humdinger of a game to please the fans inside Sixfields and with over 900 Vale fans in attendance, I think it’s going to be a cracking atmosphere.

If you’re undecided about whether to go to the game, let me help make up your mind.

You’ve (probably) not been to the football for over 18 months. This new look Cobblers side are looking to play fast, flowing, attacking football and manager Brady wants to get us fans off our seats. It’s going to be an afternoon full of raw emotion and excitement. Join us and celebrate a sport that means so much to so many.

Charles: 4-3 Cobblers

Neil: 0-0

Danny: 2-2

Jefé: 5-0 Cobblers
