Sunderland up next for Curle’s Cobblers

Northampton Town Podcast Sunderland – Danny and Charles are joined by Sunderland fan and podcaster Graham to preview the Black Cats’ visit to Sixfields on Saturday.

Sunderland fixture is the reason we want regular League One football

Other than a certain derby game, this Saturday’s fixture at home to Sunderland was the number one game I was looking forward to going to when we won promotion to League One.

Obviously the world had other ideas and we will all have to be satisfied by watching it on ifollow rather than from the stands at Sixfields.

I’m still excited for the game though. Sunderland are a massive club at this level and are yet another example of why League One is so much better than League Two.

I remember the John Gorman and Stuart Gray League One era in the mid to late 00’s. The Cobblers faced sides like Leeds United and Nottingham Forest and I absolutely loved it.

I didn’t miss any of those games and I never left a game thinking we were out of our depth either.

This season is different but we still have some massive clubs in the mix with the likes of Ipswich, Charlton and Sunderland. It’s just a shame that fans won’t be in the stadium to witness these games in person.

These fixtures are the very reason why it is so important that The Cobblers stay up this season.

While teams like Ipswich and Sunderland will surely be promoted to the Championship at some point, history shows that they will be replaced by other teams who fall from grace.

It isn’t just the stature of these clubs that make the games so enticing. The large support that they bring with them is so important financially to clubs like Northampton.

Imagine if we were in League One year in year out with an away end twice the size of the current South Stand. The additional income that playing sides with large followings such as Sunderland could set the club up to push on and compete with those big names.
