Gareth Willsher

NTFC's Head of Media, Gareth Willsher talks about Graham Carr's Division 4 title winners of 1986/87.

The first fan to take a trip down Memory Lane is Gareth Willsher who talks to Charles about his first season as a Cobblers fan – Graham Carr’s Division 4 title winning year of 1986/87.

Carr had joined the Cobblers as First Team Manager towards the end of the 84/85 season. The Cobblers won 6 out of those last 7 games before Carr set about re-shaping his squad.

In his first full season as a Football League manager, Carr oversaw an 8th placed finish in Division 4. The Cobblers were awarded a cash prize for being the first team in the country to score 50 goals and the County Ground lost it’s main stand, having been condemned after the Bradford City fire. In it’s place a small stand was erected that was later nicknamed the Meccano Stand due to the scaffolding that surrounded it.

It was the following season where Carr’s Cobblers made history, waltzing to the Division 4 title with 99 points and a blistering 103 goals.
